HAFTED LANCE

Used in the hunting of: Whale, Polar Bear and Deer

The shaft is probably made of spruce. The head is of dark gray chert.

3.5 inches in length, and 1.9" in width, a thickness of .37"

Old Eskimo skin scraper with flaked flint blade (1-1/2” x 1-1/8” x 3/8”)

 and curved “pistol-grip” wooden handle (2-5/8” x 1-1/2” x 1-1/2”) showing two shallow finger hollows.

From Point Hope, Alaska

Collected by F. A. Goodbrod (1894-1962), a mineralogist who prospected throughout Alaska in the early 1950s acquiring artifacts from the native inhabitants of Saint Lawrence Island, King Island, Point Hope, Kobuk River, Yukon River, Galena, and Nenana.

The intended use is for drilling, or rather reaming out, the large cavity

 in the base of the ivory head of a whale harpoon.

The shape of the blade is well suited for this purpose
